Germany: VB Group builds 'Elite' greenhouse for Dümmen Orange
The new greenhouse will be at the heart of Dümmen Orange's global production of varieties. In that capacity, the location will be a benchmark for future hygienic standards for Dümmen Orange. This investment underlines the importance of the Rheinberg location for growers operating worldwide.
The ceremony started with a short speech by Managing Director Thomas Bousart. Those present included the mayor of Rheinberg, representatives of the Chamber of Agriculture of North Rhine-Westphalia, Eversael, VB Group and several invited guests.
In his speech, Bousart highlighted the planned changes for this location. An important pillar for the company is plant health. That's why Dümmen Orange is investing in this new elite location for annuals, perennials, cut flowers and potted plants. Various locations were considered for this new greenhouse, but Rheinberg was chosen. "The location is central in Europe, has a good climate and qualified staff," Bousart said. The new greenhouse is divided into a quarantine part and an elite propagation part, and is unique in the world. According to Bousart, the new project is more of a laboratory than a greenhouse, offering Dümmen the opportunity to reach high hygienic standards, thus realizing a back-up of valuable plant material.
An expansion is already planned for the coming years. The location provides for expansion opportunities of up to around 3.5 ha in the future – good for job opportunities and the region.
