UK: Roses cast spell over enchanted castle
More than 1,500 David Austin roses were used across three installations. For the grand entrance, Dennis Kneepkens developed two floral walls adjacent to the main castle doorway to envelop visitors in the color and fragrance of flowers. Four beautiful David Austin blooms were featured: Beatrice (Auslevity), Edith (Auspluto), Charity (Auswasher) and Juliet (Ausjameson).
The Queen’s Gallery was transformed by Dr. Solomon Leong who combined flowers of Asia with the garden of England. Traditional Kent hops, apples and English Roses were incorporated into a table and canopy display alongside orchids and amaryllis. Teacups were overflowing with David Austin’s roses rather than England’s traditional brew.
In the Chapel, an installation by the British Academy of Floral Art recreated the atmosphere of an English country lane and woodland. Visitors were guided through a natural archway of intertwined branches which created a peaceful enclave. Foliage and grasses at the base of the arch, punctuated with the ruby rose color of Darcey (Auschariot) created a natural meadow effect. The lighter tones of Juliet, Patience (Auspastor) and Edith blooms were positioned at head height to highlight their beauty and enable visitors to enjoy their fragrance at close-quarters.
From subtle to dramatic opulence — the rich cerise and red tones of Kate (Auschris), Darcey and Tess (Ausyacht) were used by the Leeds Castle Floristry Team to create a four-poster bed fit for a princess, with blooms cascading to the floor.
The Castle was brought to life by these magical floral installations. Visitors were enchanted by the heady scents and sights of these fairy-tale designs.
