Denmark: Better schlumbergera season for Rosa Danica
9 cm: more a discount product
This year, Rosa Danica decided to decrease the production of their 9cm pot sizes. "Last year, we did some improvements in our cultivation to enhance the quality of the plants, but unfortunately, the prices were lower than predicted and particularly for the 9cm pot sizes." According to Ryg, this size has become more of a discount product over the last year. So, they drastically cut down the 9cm production; by around two-thirds. "The market requires a high number of these products for lower prices. We cannot offer them for these prices because of the effort we put in the cultivation process to achieve our desired quality. However, we still have clients that value this quality and we are therefore mainly producing the 9 cm schlumbergeras for them this year."
more 12 cm
In contrast to the schlumbergeras in 9cm pot sizes, they increased the production of their 12cm schlumbergeras. "This size is not a discount product yet. We still receive fairy good prices for these sizes and combined with the pre-orders we received, we decided to increased the production by around 10 percent."
Better season
Due to these adjustments, Rosa Danica experiences a better season. "Last year in December, the sales dropped drastically. After Christmas, we still had some plants left, so we had to sell them in January. This year, in contrast, we still see the desired demand. We are on schedule and we will probably be sold out before Christmas."

2018 - The 1 Rose
The main crop of Rosa Danica is the potted rose. Over the last years, they were innovating their assortment and in 2018, they will put a new variety on the market; The 1 Rose. They are currently trialing the rose and the first varieties caught the eye of many visitors at the exhibition they attended this second half of this year. "At the FlowersExpo in Moscow, in September, this variety won the Visitors Choice award and at the FloraHolland Trade Fair last month, visitors were impressed too." The 1 Rose is a living cut rose with roots and flowers 4 to 6 weeks. In 2018, it will be put on the market commercially and Ryg has high expectations for this variety."
