Europe: A Campanula season with ups and downs

The Campanula season is almost over. Time to look back. Bodil Clara Johansen of Thoruplund looks back to a season with ups and downs. “Overall it was a good season. But compared to last year it was much less stable. We have had a very good start. Due to the weather, March was bad for us, like for many other garden products. Then spring was good and summer was really hard. The last two months temperatures were very high in Europe, to which we mainly export. It was hard work to get the plants out of the door.”

Bodil's father started the Danish company in 1974. The company now has production locations in Vietnam and Turkey, where cuttings and young plants are being produced. They also have a breeding facility. “90 percent of our production is exported, Germany is our most important export market.”

Half September the Campanulas will make place for the Schlumbergera, or the Christmas cactus. “We cultivate them till the end of December and in January we start with the new season of Campanula”, Bodil says. “Next spring we will produce a new variety of Campanula.”
