GlobalGAP to launch consumer portal for certified flowers and ornamentals
The GlobalGAP Standard for flowers and ornamentals is already successfully implemented by horticultural companies in more than 30 countries and independently controlled on a yearly basis. Certified companies consistently implement the strict environmental requirements, apply measures for occupational safety and health, and provide good working conditions in accordance with the ILO core labor standards.
GlobalGAP is planning to give these farms an online portal to allow them to present their work in farm profiles on the consumer website. With the help of a producer number (the so-called GlobalGAP Number (GGN)), consumers can find out where plants come from and are given insights into the production methods and producers through the respective profiles.
Complete certification from initial seedling and horticulture farm to wholesale operation is a prerequisite for the identification on the product – only in that way can a mix-up with non-certified products be avoided.
The portal brings additional transparency to the market and creates added value for certified producers in comparison to non-certified producers. Informative, consumer-friendly articles are also provided to support consumer understanding of the responsible production of flowers and ornamentals all over the world.
