PanAmerican Seed to double ornamental pot plant offer
Pot Plants are described by the breeder as the consumer's “gateway to gardening’’. And now that Ex-Plant products are part of the PanAmerican Seed selection, means an even more exciting expansion for the coming two years.
Until recently the offer of pot plant varieties from PanAmerican Seed was limited to gerbera, some ornamental peppers, pot lisianthus, hypoestes and pot sunflowers, so the expansion to include the Ex-Plant varieties will double the amount of varieties on offer by PanAmerican Seed.
Carsten Leth and Susanne Villemoes at CAST
Now Global Product Manager for Pot Plants at PanAmerican Seed and founder of Ex-Plant – Carsten Leth – was presenting together with Ex-Plant breeder Susanne Villemoes for the first time at the Spring Trials in California. He said: “It was great to be here at CAST together with Susanne and we really enjoyed our time presenting to the different groups from growers and retailers. All the varieties looked great and they were popular with our guests with plenty of questions being fielded concerning how they could start growing the new varieties. It’s an exciting time!”
In the new catalogue from PanAmerican Seed, which was available for the first time at CAST, all Ex-Plant varieties were featured and in particular the ornamental capsicum varieties are displayed in a way that allows the grower to target a particular sales period of the year.
Pot Plant expert Carsten Leth added: “Even though all the varieties are new to the PanAmerican Seed selection I would like to highlight the most recent introductions from the Ex-Plant assortment which include from the Chill Out series of pepper: Yellow Tomato which is a hot pepper but shaped like a tomato. Then in the same series we have Cosmo which is a unique hot pepper with red and purple fruits on the same plant.
“Furthermore in the ornamental pepper category we have introduced Samba XL Orange which produces big orange fruits from plants that require little or no PGR treatment.”
“Finally, in our Exacum range of flowering pot plants, we have developed Exacum Supreme which is a pot plant ideal for summer production in 6cm pots that require little or no PGRs, and for the consumer they hold a sweet fragrance and long lasting flowers.”
But, the range of pot plants offered by PanAmerican Seed does not stop there. The Revolution and Mega Revolution range of pot plant Gerberas are still very much a global breeding item for the pot plant breeder.
This year in the Revolution Gerbera series, there are two colour improvements and one whole new colour class that will be introduced. Red with Light Eye and Yellow with Light Eye will both be improved, then Salmon Shades will be the new introduction.
Furthermore, from PanAmerican Seed, in the Mega Revolution of large flowered pot Gerbera series, an introduction of Deep Rose with Light Eye will be introduced.
The key selling point from the pot gerbera range from PanAmerican Seed is the speed and ability to schedule these products so that you can hit your delivery targets. Revolution and Mega Revolution are the ones to choose if you are on a tight deadline.
Lastly from PanAmerican Seed there are two new ornamental Pepper varieties that will be introduced. During the autumn time, there is a real hype to have these brightly coloured products in your house. Last year a new product was introduced into this class of ornamental peppers called Hot Pops Purple where orange and purple berries were produced on a lovely compact plant.
This season PanAmerican Seed will introduce two further products to this niche market which are called ‘Blaze’ which is a gift item that features distinct large fruits that start out yellow and mature to red which presents a plant that can have yellow, orange and red fruits all on the same plant.
The other new introduction in the ornamental pepper range is new ‘Wicked’. The peppers on these naturally compact plants start out purple and mature to deep red colours – something that will really capture retail attention.
