Floricultura to establish new greenhouse facility in Holambra, Brazil
Marco Heijnen is coordinating the project from the main office of Floricultura in the Netherlands. The breeding- and propagation company started its activities in Brazil quite some years ago already. "Through last years the Brazilian market grew rapidly. Recently this growth flattened a bit, but expectations for the near future are great. It's not just us expanding, many other floriculture production companies are experiencing growth as well."
Currently the plot is being prepared for construction. Therefore, no less than 60.000 m3 of earth has to be shoveled.
The greenhouse facility will be build by a local greenhouse builder. Dutch greenhouse techniques and knowledge will mostly be imported from home.
On site, young plants grown in the Netherlands will be able to get used to the climate conditions. "The climate in Holambra is quite different from the climate in the Netherlands. Also, transport is not easy on the plants. Therefore, a in-between phase of acclimatizing is desirable."
The area designated for greenhouses in Holambra is situated two hours driving from São Paulo. It is home to about 150 horticultural (mostly floriculture) companies.
Floricultura is going strong. Recently, two hectares (about 5 acre) of greenhouses were built in Salinas, California. From there the North American market is accommodated: plants from the new facility in Holambra will primarily be intended for Brazilian customers.
