"Chrysanthemums and lisianthus are the most popular flowers for this day", says John van Elstgeest of Flower Circus from out of Krasnodar. Yesterday, he visited the flower market in this area that was packed with parents who were buying some flowers for this special day of their child. Elstgeest took some photo's and was so kind to share them with us.
On the Flowermarket, Elstgeest saw a lot of locally grown chrysanthemums, lisanthus, asters and gladiolus. "In Krasnodar and the surrounding area, a lot of flowers are being cultivated. For this reason, the majority of the flowers on the flower market in this region, I think around 70 percent, are locally grown and the remaining is imported. These numbers, however, do not represent the flower supply in whole Russia. In Moscow, for example, the numbers are about the opposite. Over there, probably about 80 or 90 percent of the flowers have been imported."
Women's Day, celebrated on March 8, and this first school day are one of the most important days for the flower trade in Russia and this is not only reflected at the flower markets. "Usually, there are no flowers in the shelves at supermarkets, but during these days you see them almost in every, the more larger, chains."
Elstgeest notices an increase in flower sales throughout Russia over this entire year. "When being in Russia, one hears that the trade is picking up. The positive trend that started the beginning of this year continues." According to Elstgeest, no one has a clear explanation for this increase. "We see that people are positively minded again, are willing to buy flowers and are looking for new ideas."
