Photo report Flower Expo Ukraine

Last week the Flower Expo Ukraine took place in the International Exhibition Centre in Kiev. For the 12th (almost) consecutive year the organization of the fair got the main actors within the Ukrainian floral industry together. Next to Ukrainian companies, no less than 34 Dutch trade and breeding companies were present.

Eugene Sidorov and Anastasia Ruzhyna present the software solutions of Diamond; Yuriy Petrychko, manager Eastern Europe at Haakman Flowerbulbs; Hennie Brockhoff and Maria Lazebnaya, Schreurs. Together with Nova Exhibitions Hennie's company FlowerFame helps organise and decorate the fair; and Arno Klijbroek of bulb exporting company StoKolex.

Especially the presence of many trade companies is a good sign business is ongoing. More than breeding companies, trade parties are volatile in nature, visiting those places where money is to be made. Or they don't come at all. Despite figures concern import and export are lacking, a certain stability is definitely present. As in many other East-European nations, festive days like International Women's Day and the first school day require flowers, no matter exchange rates. And with 45 million inhabitants, market prospects remain interesting.

No doubt the most popular flower in Ukraine is the rose. Also, when strolling about on the exhibition, one cannot help but notice a great interest in bulbs. Many bulb importing and exporting companies were present, and all of them had positive things to say about the Ukrainian market. Lastly, the limited scope of locale production is noticeable. Allegedly, only two or three companies can measure themselves with high-tech production companies abroad. At the exhibition, only Ascania and Camelia, both rose growers, were present. Other than that, the Ukrainian floral market is dominated either by trade companies or florist suppliers.

This year the fair welcomed 8,970 visitors, a 24% increase as compared to last year, when 7,243 people visited the exhibition.
