India: Gerberas bloom in Iglas in summer

Growing the Gerbera flower in summer, especially when temperatures touch 40 degree Celcius and above, may sound impossible but a retired official-turned-farmer is doing just that at Bahadurpur village, Iglas tehsil in Aligarh. The flowers are now being sold at Delhi's Ghazipur 'phool mandi'.

Iglas is primarily a potato belt with the tuber being cultivated in around 12,000 hectare of land, that makes for over 50% of potato yield in Aligarh. Now, the Gerbera flower is being cultivated in two acres land in a ply house. The flower plantation was launched in Aligarh in November 2014.

A retired commissioner of the labour department-turned-farmer Mohan Singh is working on a government- sponsored program to grow Gerbera. "I started work on growing Gerbera in the poly house. The project is being assisted by the National Horticulture Board and financed by Corporation Bank. The place is suitable for cultivating Gerbera flowers. The soil is sandy, water is not salty and this makes cultivation, which started in April 2015, suitable here. All we need to take care of is the temperature — it should not be 40 degrees or the flower will wilt."
