Ethiopian Magical Farm:

Carnations grown at 2,500 meters altitude

Ethiopian Magical Farm is a carnation nursery of 35 hectares located in Ethiopia. At an altitude of 2,500 meters they grow common carnations, the disbudded variant with one flower bud, to be precise. Dani Bentora and his wife Ora are the owners of the company, both of Israeli descent. Ethiopian Magical Farm, EMF for short, has an annual production of 35 million stems, all of which are sold through FloraHolland. Since August 2008 EMF has worked with Geert Valstar, an unpacking company in Honselersdijk. The carnations are traded under the name EMF/Valstar.

Improve each other
EMF/Valstar has been a FleuraMetz Preferred Supplier since 2015. The stable climate in Ethiopia allows them to provide a reliable, year-round range. After years of innovation this range comprises no less than 35 species. Bart Dunki Jacobs, buyer at FleuraMetz: "EMF/Valstar is open to everything. I share new ideas and customer needs with them. This also applies the other way around: EMF/Valstar regularly test new species in the vase. They then ask me whether I like it and if there is a demand for it. In short: We improve each other''.

Around the EMF
EMF provides humane working conditions for its employees and supports them and their children with education and medical care. Girls also receive education, which is not commonplace in Ethiopia. There is a daycare for the little ones so parents can work. Dani and Ora do not believe that money makes the difference, but that offering jobs to the people of Ethiopia with career opportunities provides perspective and a fair chance.
