A throwback to the days we had to do it without cogeneration, diffuse glass, beneficial insects, leaf cutting robots, iPhones and rockwool. Horticulture in the 1930's was a different cup of tea.
At that time much of the Dutch greenhouses were still heated with coal. A majority of the Dutch growers cultivated melons on barges and peaches in the greenhouse. Later on the first tomato sorting machines came up and of course auctioning on the clock was an important development.
The video below shows how exactly that was done. It comes with English subtitles and was made by the Polygoon-Profilti broadcasting network in 1935. Filming was done in the Westland and in the area of the Poeldijk auction.
