Russia: Cold greenhouse provides Saint Petersburg with flowers

Saint Petersburg will be able to meet up to 60% of the city's demand in flowers for flowerbeds after a new greenhouse complex opened in the south of the metropolis. The young plants grown in an unheated greenhouse in Saint Petersburg are said to be 30% cheaper than the Dutch analogues. The low temperature in the greenhouse also means they are better suited for the climatic conditions of the northern city.

The director of the enterprise, Zhanna Khaina, said that only last year they grew 1.5 million flower seedlings, acclimated to local conditions. The plants are first grown in a warm greenhouse, the temperature and humidity are controlled by a computer. After that, they are placed in a cold greenhouse, where they get adjusted to the street temperatures.

“Unlike Dutch seedlings, that grow and bloom very fast and intensely, our flowers last in flowerbeds much longer, up to the first frosts”, shares Mr. Khaina.

The JSC Kalinin garden and park complex that started in 2013, provides 3 regions around Saint Petersburg with its produce and is fully self-sufficient. Apart from the flowers, the enterprise grows vegetable seedlings and organic vegetables that are sold around the city.

The governor of Saint Petersburg, Georgiy Poltavchenko, visited the enterprise together with the vice governor Nikolay Bondarenko. Praising the success of the greenhouse complex, he noted that “the money was not invested in vain”.
