18th World Rose Convention: June 28 - July 4
Denmark: Rose breeders and lovers gather in Copenhagen
Next week, the word of roses will gather at the 18th World Rose Convention (WRC). It is organized by the World Federation of Rose Societies (WFRS) and this year and for the first time in their history it will be held in Scandinavia. It will take place in the Danish city Copenhagen and will be hosted by the Danish Rose Society. The theme is "a Fairy Tale of Roses" and over 600 rose breeders and rose lovers from all over the world will gather. This five-day event will start on June 28 and run till Wednesday July 4.
The World Federation of Rose Societies is a federation of the national rose societies of 40 countries, representing rose lovers around the world. Their goal is to expand contact among them and increase the flow of knowledge about the rose. So during the World Rose Convention, lectures on the past, present, future, but also on Nordic roses are given and WFRS meetings and garden tours to several of Copenhagen's parks and gardens and other sites are organized.
In between, also new roses of well-known rose breeders will be baptized. After the Opening Ceremony in the Copenhagen City hall on June 29, for example, plant breeder Pernille Olesen is expected to baptize the convention rose, bred by Poulsen Roses.

Then, on June 30 the WFRS 50th anniversary will be celebrated and the WFRS President will give his celebration speech, and the President and all former Presidents present will act as Godmothers and -fathers to a rose, bred by the Danish Rosa Eskelund of Roses Forever, commemorating the event. The rose is a charity rose, marking the WFRS 50th Anniversary, and Roses Forever are donating a part of the royalties to WFRS. Later that day, another rose of Poulsen Roses will be baptized to commemorate The Danish Rose Society's 25th anniversary.

On July 1, at the royal palace of Fredensborg – the Queen’s summer residence - a rose chosen by His Royal Highness Prince Henrik will be baptized in his honour by the Danish famous royal actor Ghita Nørby. She will also give a speech.
Also the participants can make their voices heard. On the first day (June 29), they can vote for the most beautiful rose and for the most fragrant rose that are planted in the lawns in front of Rosenborg Castle. North European rose breeders, Danish Poulsen Roses, English Austin Roses, and North German Kordes Roses and Tantau Roses will create a display with their most fragrant roses, just as at famous flower shows. The winners will be announced at the celebration the following day in Valby Park, June 30.
And on the last day of the event (July 4), next to lectures and garden tours, there will be a breeder's panel where Danish rose breeders Roses Forever and Poulsen Roses, German breeder Kordes Rosen and French breeder Meilland will answer questions from rose lovers in the room.
During the event, lunches and dinners are organized and even there roses are used. The edible Gourmet Roses of Roses Forever will beautify several dishes.
