As we all know, the most important part of growing plants is watering them. However it is easy to forget the last time you watered your plant. “The majority of plants are not growing well precisely, because of too much or too little water. We simply forget to water them, or we are watering them too often”, says Andrej Nastran. He developed Plantray, a device which measures the humidity of the soil and reminds the consumer when to water the plants. This week he launched the PlantRay on Kickstarter.

Four settings
“The device uses an advanced capacitive soil sensor and a complex algorithm to recognize soil texture and its properties”, Andrej explains. “We tried our best to make it as easy as possible to use for the consumer. First of all, it has four settings. One for cactus and thick-leaved plants, one for ordinary green plants, one for plants that thrive in moist environments and one for orchids.
Three lights
The device just needs one battery. It has one button, a beeper and a moist detector and is has three colors of light that alerts the consumer. A blue light means the soil is perfectly moist. Green means the soil is suitably moist, and a red light means the soil is dry. A red warning light blinks every 4 seconds and if a period without warning is longer, the device starts beeping every 2 minutes.
Ready for the next step
Now two people have joined Andrej to make PlantRay commercial. Uroš Gomboc is in charge of sales and marketing and Hinko Golias supports the project financially, technically and helps in production. The PlantRay team is based in Slovenia.
“After thorough product research, we are ready for the next step – making it commercial. We have decided to present it to a wider group of people through the mass media financing platform Kickstarter and to launch our product into production with their support.”
