A group of students has gotten to know horticulture on Solexes (a classic Dutch moped). They made tomato soup and bruschetta at Tomatoworld in Honselersdijk and did The Pepper Challenge at Westlandpeppers in De Lier. The Solex Vegetable Tour was organized by Greenport West for the Dutch Agri Food Week.
Greenport West-Holland is one of the founding partners of Dutch Agri Food Week, taking place for the fourth time this year (5 - 16 October): farmers and growers, entrepreneurs from the supply and process industry, retail, government, and scientists show how they work towards safe and healthy food.

Long line of Solexes
For Dutch Agri Food Week the Greenport organized the Solex Vegetable Tour for students. The participants belonged to different studies, such as Dutch law, Aeronautical Engineering, Medicine, and Food and Diet. The purpose was to inform the students about Dutch horticulture and to reach the students and their network.

The students were transported via bus from station Delft to De Tuinderij in De Lier, the starting point of the tour. In a long line of Solexes the students drove to Tomatoworld in Honselersdijk, where they received a tour of the greenhouse and information about the growth of tomatoes and how Dutch horticulture is working towards a better and healthier world. They were also put to work: the bruschetta, tomato soup, and fruit salad were served for lunch afterwards.

The next stop was nursery Westlandpeppers in De Lier, where they were educated about the taste and spiciness of peppers and a tour of the greenhouses with peppers and mini bell peppers. The Pepper Challenge followed. A few students dared to taste the hottest peppers of Westlandpeppers.

The students indicated afterwards they were very enthusiastic about a look behind the scenes of horticulture. "I was not aware there was so much involved in the growing of bell peppers," according to one of the students. "I thought pesticides were still used a lot, but that is not the case", according to another. The Greenport asked the students to tell the story of horticulture to family members and fellow students.
