Haim Rosenblum, Hishtil:

Gaura ‘Summer Star’: compact without PGRs

Natural compact to dwarfish growth habit, range of colors, massive and uniform flowering, these are some of the characteristics on which Hishtil's new Gaura series ‘Summer Star' distinguishes itself from any other Gaura, according to Haim Rosenblum.

Rosenblum (Marketing & Sales Division Manager) holding Gaura lind. 'Summer Star Baby' at the California Spring Trials 2018 in California, USA.

Four varieties
It took several years of searching and trialing till Hishtil finally found a variety with the desired characteristics. "Summer Star Baby was the one chosen." They introduced the series with Gaura lindheimeri 'Summer Star Baby' earlier this year and presented it for the first time at the California Spring Trails in California that took place in April 2018. Later, they extended the series with Gaura lindheimeri Summer Star White, Blossom and Cherry.

Natural compact perennial
One of the special characteristics of this Gaura series is the natural compact habit. "No plant growth regulators (PGR) are needed to get this result and as far as we know, they are the most compact Gaura series in the market."

The compact to dwarfish growth habit brings more advantages. "It is suitable for 1-3 L pots and Summer Star Baby grows up to 30 cm in height and the others up to a 40 cm height, so growers can benefit from extended storage space in delivery trolleys."

Uniform growth
Long flowering spikes with very dense and massive flowering, long flowering season and uniformity are key characteristics of the 'Summer Star' varieties. All four varieties in the series present a simultaneously flowering period, growth height and growth habit. "Summer Star Baby' requires minor adjustment (trimming) that needs to be done in order to achieve uniform flowering with other Summer Star Varieties”, says Haim.

Easy to grow and maintain
Summer Star varieties appear to be easy to grow and maintain. "Growers do not need to invest many resources to achieve good results, regarding the customers, growing Summer Star does not require much maintenance; full sun and a little bit of water is all that is needed."

The series can be used for planting a garden hedge or in borders as well.

IPM Essen
From January 22 - 25, 2019, the IPM Essen will be held in the Messe Essen in Essen, Germany. Hishtil will be present at this trade fair and showcasing their varieties in Hall 2 Booth 2B15.
