The Bransford Webbs Plant Company have achieved the BS8555 accreditation for environmental management for ten consecutive years, having first achieved this certification back in 2008. Their environmental objectives are reviewed and updated on an annual basis.
Among other targets, they have reduced their peat usage, continue to catch, recycle and reuse all the rainwater which falls on the glasshouses and office / despatch buildings and have a 60KW solar panel system fitted to the main despatch shed roof. Their spray programs are developed to be compatible with the wide range of biological control used on the nursery. They have also been at the forefront of the industry initiative to replace black plastic pots with a taupe kerbside recyclable alternative.
In addition to these achievements, they are now a zero to landfill business, in conjunction with Smiths of Gloucester, their waste collection contractors, with all waste now being diverted away from landfill. All waste, which traditionally would have gone to landfill, is now diverted through other means, including Energy from Waste (EfW) and Refuse Derived from Fuel (RDF).
Energy from Waste involves burning waste at over 850°C. The heat from the chamber creates steam which can be used to make electricity. Any waste which can’t be burnt collects as bottom ash to be used as recycled building materials and all emissions are carefully controlled. Refuse Derived from Fuel is fuel produced by sorting and processing solid general waste which is shredded and baled up to be used as fuel.
