Turkey: Edremit municipality will grow ornamental plants and flowers in 75-hectare area

Ornamental plants and flowers will be grown in an organized agricultural production zone established in Edremit town of Balikesir in a growing area of 75 hectares. 1,500 people will be working in the project and the estimated annual contribution from the project to the local economy will be around 20 million USD.

The greenhouses will be built in Cikrikci Valley below the mountains of Kaz, an area which is also suitable for the use of geothermal resources. The current timeline of the project aims to have all the production area operational in 2020.

Edremit Mayor Ali Sirmali: “We have received the final approval from the Ministry of Agriculture on May 24th and now we increased our efforts to speed up the construction process and to start production as soon as possible. The soil and climate conditions in the area are quite suitable for agricultural production. We will also use geothermal resources to lower heating expenses in greenhouses. The area will be around 75 hectares big and we will focus on cut flowers and ornamental plant production. We will then sell these products to both domestic and export markets. We have a lot of endemic plants growing on the mountain of Kaz, we will be able to duplicate and reproduce these endemic plants in these greenhouses.”
