Let the cobbler stick to his last, is a saying that does not apply to La Gaitana Farms in Colombia. Even though they have been growing carnations for many years, they are not afraid to expand their assortment with a completely new product: ranunculus.
Frans Buzek at Proflora 2019 in Bogota, Colombia.
“We have been growing ranunculus for about six months now. We have a consistent commercial production with 6,000 to 8,000 stems a week”, says Frans Buzek. “Ranunculus is a highly demanded product in the United States, our main market. It is a big advantage that we can grow it year-round. However, this is a completely different product to carnations when it comes to shipment. It is more fragile, but that is worth bearing in mind. We believe this will be a great success, as the demand is so high.”
Besides ranunculus, La Gaitana Farms started growing eryngium, which is being sold worldwide.
