Trade Fair Naaldwijk: Low quantity, high quality

The Trade Fair is in its second and final day and - as in the rest of the world - the coronavirus is the talk of town. Not only regarding the precautionary measurements at the show, also regarding the impact it has on the industry.

Low number of international visitors
A handful of exhibitors cancelled their participation before the show already and during the show, the international interest is low. Only some Belgians and Germans found their way to FloraHolland in Naaldwijk this week.

The auction, where the fair is being held, took some precautionary measurements like having disinfectant dispensers at the entrance and urged their own staff out the most affected area in the Netherlands (Noord-Brabant) to stay home.

Van den Berg introduces a 100% paper sleeve, explains Marjanne van den Berg. Besides, this Dutch grower has other news to share: the hydrangea variety 'Caipirinha' (on the right in the picture) has, in its category during flowering trials conducted by FloraHolland, the longest shelf life.

Quality visitors
Despite the current situation, many exhibitors weren't displeased at all. Mainly because of these two reasons: expectations were low already, so every visitor is a visitor. And on top of that, the visitor often seems to be a real or potential client. It is mainly the 'viewing public' that stayed home.

Trade main concern
The main concern is that the same situation as in China and Italy will will occur in other countries. In these countries, trade is having serious difficulties, within the chain and with the end consumer, as they are urged to stay home. Growers therefore cannot sell their plants and suppliers will be in turn affected as well.

Let the sun shine
Growers can't wait till the weather improves. Then, consumers are expected to go gardening again and in turn demand is expected to increase. But if rains continue, the pansy season won't be satisfying.
