Gemüsebau Steiner relies on industry-specific ERP-solution from activeIT

"With traceNET-Production, processes can be planned and controlled effectively”

Gemüsebau Steiner is a family business founded in 2014 in Kirchweidach, Upper Bavaria, which specialises in natural, fresh and above all sustainable vegetable cultivation. Today, with over 200 employees, Gemüsebau Steiner and BIOhof Kirchweidach cultivate 32 hectares of land with tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and strawberries. The company's ERP solution used up to now consisted of several individual solutions that allowed department-specific use. However, a comprehensive data exchange and thus a continuous clear planning and control was only possible to a limited extent.

Due to the constant growth and increasing complexity of planning, the managing director, Mr. Wolfgang Steiner, decided to replace the previous ERP solution with an industry-specific solution with comprehensive planning and control.

Individual adaptation
The management decided in favour of the software specially developed for food producing companies by activeIT in Austria. At each location an implementation of traceNET (the enterprise resource planning system), traceNET-Production (the production planning and control), the LiveAPP (for a live overview of all production relevant information) and traceNET GO! (for mobile handling of warehouse processes) was made. The managing director, Mr. Wolfgang Steiner, who himself graduated a secondary school with IT specialization and is very well versed in the field, is enthusiastic.

The software solution was individually adapted to the requirements of the family business and connected by interfaces with the existing financial accounting software and the time recording system. Labellers and checkweighers in the production and packing were integrated to traceNET to enable a clear and simple control.

"traceNET includes everything a modern enterprise resource planning system in this industry must have", says Sebastian Gruttauer, the company's operations manager. "With traceNET-Production connected to the ERP system, processes can be planned and controlled effectively. Workers in the production just need to work at the touch screen PC. The individual setting of checkweighers or labellers is no longer necessary and a few quick steps directly lead to the result".

Highest added value
ERP projects are usually time and cost intensive. This project was started on the 18th of August in 2018 and the system could already go live at the first location on the 14th of January in 2019. Nevertheless, during this period, special customer requests and modifications could be implemented to the system on an ongoing basis. This was possible because activeIT's development department works according to an agile process model to provide a high level of transparency and responsiveness.

Open issues are prioritized together with the customer in order to deliver the requests that bring the highest added value with each update. Mr. Sebastian Gruttauer comments: "activeIT has proven to be very flexible in its collaboration. Customer demands and requirements were implemented quickly".

Prepared for every challenge
In the meantime, the system has been successfully in productive use for over a year. Nevertheless, the cooperation continues in order to seamlessly add new requirements and features to the solution, with which food producers are constantly confronted. The next project with BI (Business Intelligence) has already been started. “With activeIT as a partner, we are sure that we are prepared for every challenge in the coming years.”
