Kunming Jinning Flower Growers achieved a "good start" in sales in the first quarter

From New Year's Day to the Chinese New Year, and then to the International Women's Day, the sales price of fresh-cut flowers in Jinning District of Kunming City has been rising all the way, allowing flower growers to achieve a "good start" in sales revenue in the first quarter of this year.

Baofeng Street, Jinning District, is the main production area of fresh-cut flowers in Jinning. The flower planting area is more than 806 hectares. The number of people engaged in flower-related industries accounted for more than 70% of the total population in the street. Around International Women's Day in 2021, the local carnations and roses planted by Mr. Han Bo became popular in the market, especially carnations, which are usually sold for less than 1 RMB per branch, but this year can be sold for more than 3 RMB per branch. When the yield of each hectare is the highest, more than 300,000 branches can be harvested, and the income per hectare is more than 900,000 RMB.

Mr. Han Bo now sees that every flower in the greenhouse will be cut and sold as soon as it reaches a certain maturity. He said that he has grown carnations for 5 or 6 years, and the price has been the highest since his beginning of planting flowers. The flowers are very popular in the market, and florists are even in the ”competition” to get these flowers when they just arrive in the trading market.

Mrs. Yang Hongyu has been planting gerbera for more than 6 years. In the gerbera greenhouse, the colorful and beautiful flowers are blooming and showing the most wonderful flower scene. Compared with other fresh-cut flower varieties, the cultivation and maintenance of gerbera are relatively simple. Every morning from 7 am to 9 am, Mrs. Yang enters the greenhouse and starts cutting flowers. The fresh-cut flowers are put on a flower cover to prevent bruising, and every 20 branches of different colors are made into a bundle, tied with rubber bands, loaded in a car, and pulled to the market for sale.

The price of gerbera on that day was between 4 and 7 RMB. After some bargaining between Mrs. Yang and the florists, the flowers were finally sold at a price of 6.5 RMB/ bundle. Since the winter of 2020 entered the peak production period of gerbera, the prices have been relatively stable. The price is higher when getting less production, and the price is lower when harvesting more, with slight fluctuations. However, in general, it has risen compared with previous years. In the past few years, Mrs. Yang's gross income has been 150,000 RMB per year, and it seems that this year will increase slightly.

Flower planting is one of the pillar industries of agriculture in Jinning District. Seven of the ten fresh-cut flowers in China are from Yunnan, and seven of the ten fresh-cut flowers in Yunnan are from Jinning. In 2021, Jinning District will vigorously highlight the advantages of the "Flower City in the Plateau", promote the business card known as “Jinning Flower", and strive to make the planting area of flower horticulture exceed 400 hectares, the output reaches 5 billion branches, and the output value exceeds 3.2 billion RMB. Further, to bring tangible benefits to local people.
