With the growing awareness of reducing the cost of transportation while at the same time maintaining freshness, a combination of controlled atmosphere (CA) storage and 1-MCP technology has been proven effective and widely applied by fruit producers around the world. Recently, researchers in Taiwan are also considering introducing this practice into flower transportation, in order to expand the market territory for Oncidium, one of the most popular flowers in East Asia.
By the end of 2020, Lytone Enterprise, cooperated with Taiwan’s renowned official flower research institute on trials of storing Oncidium treated with AnsiP-S, Lytone’s 1-MCP technology, in a 40-foot container equipped with a CA system. The storage trial took place at 11℃ and 90% RH beginning from 31 December 2020. On 21 January 2021, all the Oncidium was taken out from a CA container to proceed on vase life observation at room temperature for 7 days. Results demonstrated that around 50% of flowers treated with AnsiP-S still flourished, while non-treated flowers almost withered at all.
“According to the result, we learned that AnsiP-S ensured freshness of Oncidium for almost one week after 21 days of storage under CA system. It’s a breakthrough for exporters wishing to ship flowers via ocean freight with CA system in order to reduce logistic cost,” said Dr. William Chang, founder, and CEO of Lytone Enterprise.
"The climate of Taiwan is very suitable for the plantation of Oncidium. Due to its unique characteristics, rich color, and elegant style, it’s favored mostly by consumers in Japan. With the advantage of Lytone’s 1-MCP technology along with CA transportation, Taiwan’s Oncidium will have its potential to be distributed to other major markets around the world."
