A three-kilometre lineup of vehicles formed at a Grand Bend greenhouse on Saturday, with people queuing for an unlikely product: a Boston fern. Within six hours, staff at Westland Greenhouses Garden Centre sold 2,500 plants.
"It was very overwhelming," said Anita VanAdrichem, who owns the greenhouse south of Grand Bend with her husband Paul. The lineup began an hour before the sale began, and throughout the morning people waited up to 90 minutes for their chance to buy a fern.
"We stick the Interac machine in their window, and then they can pay," said VanAdrichem, who said greenhouse staff loaded vehicles from the back for a contact-less interaction.
