China: Linxia Flower Port is helping local farmers

When it comes to flowers, many people will think of folk songs with strong ethnic customs. Indeed, in Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu, there are many unique flowers. They are grown in greenhouses and become the new favorites in first-tier cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. The "Flower Port" in Linxia County of the prefecture also helped local farmers live a better life by absorbing labor and land transfer.

A few days ago, reporters walked into the Linxia (Sino-Dutch) International Flower Port in Beiyuan Town, Linxia County. According to the staff here, the “intelligent field” that integrates intelligent control systems, integrated water and fertilizer systems, heating systems, and artificial light systems, was actually abandoned in the past. Through the transfer of land, the local "turning waste into treasure" allows farmers to obtain corresponding income.

A 45-year-old farmer Ms. Li Caifang is a flower packing worker at the Flower Port. Compared to the previous income of several hundred RMB a year from traditional farming, she now has a monthly salary of more than 3,000 RMB. Recalling the situation when she first came here, she said: “It was the first time that we knew that crops could be grown this way and the income from planting flowers was more than double that of traditionally planting grains.”

In recent years, Linxia County, based on the actual situation of consisting of a small area, limited arable land, a large population and insufficient agricultural resource endowment, has carried out a series of agricultural industrial structure adjustment measures to change growing grains to vegetables, mushrooms and flowers to consolidate the results of poverty alleviation and promote rural revitalization and development.

"Linxia is the key to the south of the ancient Silk Road. It has geographical advantages and is rich in land and human resources." Mentioning the reason why the Flower Port developed in Linxia County, Mr. Pan Shoufeng, deputy general manager of Baiyi Group, which invested in the Flower Port, said in an interview that it is also due to the local support policy of enterprises.

Mr. Pan Shoufeng said that the flowers produced in the Flower Port here are currently being targeted at the high-end market and are mainly sold to first-tier cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.

Ms. Yang Xiaohong, 37, is also a worker at the Flower Port. In her opinion, she has learned a lot about flowers at work and has also mastered the skills of cutting and packaging flowers through training. “The most important thing is that every day it’s a joy to look at and deal with flowers."
