The Calla is a relatively new flower when it comes to commercial production. Kapiteyn BV has been breeding, researching, propagating and selling this beautiful flower for about 30 years now.
The fact that breeding is a long-term process is certainly also true for the Calla. From cross-breeding to a possible introduction takes a period of 10 years. Not to mention all the crosses that do not make it to the finish line.
That there are still beautiful special types to come, such as a gorgeous new red variety with dark stems. "In the breeding process we are increasingly looking for genetically short varieties for pot production which is a larger market than the cut flower production," says Lennaert Kapiteijn with Kapiteyn BV.
The tubers of the Calla are quite sensitive, and therefore need to be handled with care in all stages. Kapiteyn has even had special machines developed for this purpose.
