Peter Beurskens, Modiform:

A new achievement: “We only sell thermoformed circular pots”

“We have been working on this for a while now and we are excited to announce that we have now officially achieved it: all of the thermoformed pots we sell are circular,” explains Peter Beurskens, Product Manager at Modiform. Sustainability has always been at the forefront of the company and this new achievement is another step forward. “Because of the raw material shortage, it is important to reuse as many raw materials as possible. At Modiform, we are taking our responsibility by selling pots that will be recycled through household waste systems.”

R&R and PCR
In order to make an environmentally-friendly change to their assortment, Modiform decided to only sell R&R and PCR pots from now on. “Classic plant pots contained additions that prohibited them from being fully recognized in the recycling process. As a result, that plastic was not being returned to make new products of. Therefore, we are no longer selling pots with those ingredients. Instead, all of our pots are now R&R pots, meaning that they are recyclable pots made from 100% recycled plastic (PP). In addition, we have Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) pots, which are made from plastic that is 100% derived from recycled consumer waste.”

The importance of sustainable plant pots
As mentioned, the classic plant pot (known as our NIR Plant Pot series) is not fully recognized in the recycling process. And as the majority of the plant pots end up at the consumer’s house, it is important to improve this process and get the plastic back to make new products, explains Beurskens. “Our products are designed so that they are properly detected in the household waste system, processed, and then return back into the plastic industry.”

“We have completely switched to these recyclable pots in order to preserve the PP plastic. Especially in these times where there is more demand for recycled materials, preserving these materials is all the more important!” says Beurskens.

Sustainability in high demand
“Unfortunately, sustainable ingredients come with a higher price tag. But we truly believe that this is worth it, as your sustainable purchase is contributing to a circular economy which results in a sustainable future for us all,” explains Beurskens. “We notice that especially in Europe the demand for our sustainable products is high. Countries that are progressive concerning sustainability (such as The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Italy, the UK, and Scandinavia) have a high interest in our sustainable solutions.”

The journey is not over yet
And the last sustainability steps have not yet been taken, as there is much more to come in Modiform’s future. “All of our thermoformed pots are now Cyclos certified, and on top of that, we are aiming for our entire assortment to eventually be circular. We are striving to achieve this in 2025. Therefore, we are continually doing research on where our products end up, and how we can make sure that they get recycled as much as possible.”
