Climate change has been evident to all over the past few years. We have witnessed various extreme weather events - from prolonged periods of drought to the recent floods, ending with the freezing temperatures of the past few days. As is known, cold weather slows down fruit development and, in extreme cases, it scalds plant tissue leading to its death. Managing to produce during these periods means achieving very good sales prices thanks to the lack of produce on the market.
It is precisely with cold temperatures in mind that geneticists from Gautier Semences developed Centauro F1 zucchini. But there is more. Centauro F1 is in fact very tolerant to the main diseases that have hindered cultivation over the past few years. It also boasts an excellent tolerance to powdery mildew.
The Gautier Sales Manager for Sicily Bruno Vacirca highlighted a few of the characteristics of this variety.
"Plants are vigorous, with short internodes and a straight growing habit. Setting and productivity are excellent also with cold temperatures. In addition, tolerance to powdery mildew is a further positive note for winter production, as plants remain healthy and can extend their cycle, increasing yields."
"Fruits are straight with slight facets. The ratio between length and diameter is perfect, making it easy to place fruits in crates and trays. The Gautier Italia staff is available for guided crop tours."
