UK: "Store confused expensive plant's color for sickness and sold it with a discount'

A couple who picked up a rare $22 (£12) houseplant were thrilled to find out the leaves are worth a staggering $323 each. UK couple Harry and Amy purchased the "extremely rare" plant at their local DIY store for a discounted price, before soon realizing the item was worth much more.

The botany enthusiasts drove the Swiss cheese plant back home after tucking it into the backseat with a seatbelt on and calculated it was worth around $1140 (£600), or around $323 per leaf. "When we first saw the plant sitting there, we kind of just looked at each other and really couldn't believe what we were seeing," Harry said. "For people who collect houseplants, it's like winning the lottery, so you can imagine what we were feeling at the time."

He added: "We hastily checked the stem for any color, we then immediately just snatched it up and strapped it in the back seat with a seatbelt like it was our child." After bringing it home and replanting it in the fresh soul, the pair realized just how valuable the houseplant species really was.

The leaves could be picked off and sold for hundreds of dollars each, or the full plant could be worth thousands.
