Australian Horticulture Statistics Handbook 2020/21

Australia Imported more cut flowers and nursery plants in 2021

The Australian Horticulture Statistics Handbook 2020/21 has been released. It outlines key statistics and insights of 75 horticultural products, including cut flowers and nurseries. In this article, we will only highlight the stats from these categories.

Cut flowers
Cut flowers are grown year-round in Australia (mainly in Perth, Wimmera, Melbourne, Central Coast, Northern Rivers, South East QLD), with peaks in February for Valentine's day, May for Mother’s Day, and a smaller peak in December for Christmas. Production occurs in high-tech glasshouses, lower-tech protected cropping, as well as in outdoor fields. The majority of cut flowers grown in Australia are grown in Victoria. For the year ending June 2021, the value of production was $277.0 m while the local wholesale value of the fresh supply was $380.5 m.

Cut flowers have been represented in the supply chain by their value rather than volume due to inconsistencies in the units by which volume of production is measured.

Compared to last year
Compared to 2020, the production, export, and wholesale value decreased (-5%, -6%, and -1%), while the imports increased by 29%.

Export countries
For the year ending June 2021, 34% of the value of cut flower exports were sent to Japan, followed by the Netherlands (21%), China and the US (both 15%), South Korea (4%) and other (11%).

Nursery
Nursery covers live plants grown for a range of uses that include; landscaping, revegetation, and distribution of ornamental retail supply chains, plus as starter plants in the commercial production of fruit, vegetables, and forestry. Nursery production occurs in all states and
territories of Australia, with the majority of production occurring in Victoria, Queensland, and New South Wales. Production occurs year-round, with selling peaks during the spring season for ornamental retail product lines. Production has been represented below by their value rather than volume.  For the year ending June 2021, the value of production was $2.79 billion while the wholesale value of the
supply was $2.93 billion.

Compared to last year
Compared to 2020, the production increased, as well as the export, import and supply wholesale value increased.

Export countries
For the year ending June 2021, 20% of the value of nursery plants exported were sent to the UK, followed by New Zealand (14%), the Netherlands (8%), Japan (7%), Zimbabwe (6%), and other (45%).
