North American coir demand keeps on growing

North American growers still have to deal with delays in the coco supply from India and Sri Lanka. The team with Fibredust explains how they help growers with the supply from Mexico. “As production ramps up for high-quality coir in Mexico, we have multiple avenues to ship from Mexico. So far we have been shipping two containers per week as well as supplying local markets with low EC coir”, says Sam Ahilan, president of Fibredust.

While the company is one of the largest producers of premium coconut coir at their owned facilities in India and Sri Lanka, they are also aware of the pressure put on the market and therefore have invested heavily in ramping up their Mexican facilities and Sam says he’s excited to be able to bring much needed high-quality coir from Mexico to growers. “With container shortage, sky-high freight rates, and port delay, I believe Mexico is the answer.  We can bring containers by rail, truck, or sea, quickly from Mexico.”

Costa Sur, their Mexican production facility, is currently making compressed blocks, bales for the local market, and will be making grow bags of various sizes in the near future. Fibredust has long been steadily increasing production looking to expand in Mexico. 

Only recently Tom Gartner, director Global Procurement at The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company, visited the facilities. Scotts is a longtime partner with Fibredust. “It’s great to visit and see all of the progress being made at Fibredust’s Costa Sur facility.  In today’s challenging international freight market, this facility is well-positioned to help support our needs”, he said.
