"It is world’s first baby Cortaderia and the demand is increasing rapidly; over the last two years, requests more than doubled", says Dimitris Dimitriou, Salesman at Fleurizon when talking about their tiniest and most compact Cortaderia: ‘Tiny Pampa’. This pampas grass will grow only 50- 70 cm high, flowers included, and has already been awarded at several horticulture shows.
Early 2022 introduced
It is a very new variety. The first plants were produced in Fleurizon's TC laboratory in 2019 to create a stock of this variety. After several field trials, Fleurizon started to produce this Cortaderia also for the commercial stock from divisions. Fleurizon offcicially introduced Tiny Pampa in early 2022.
Shipped in 3 formats
Tiny Pampa is shipped in three different formats; tissue culture, tissue culture planted plugs in 3 cm and larger plugs from divisions. Both TC plugs and plugs from divisions will flower in the first year and will fill up a 3-liter pot if planted in early springtime.
Ideal for mail order and web shop
With the plugs Fleurizon is selling, growers can produce plants in 12 cm pots and in 13 cm pots, making Tiny Pampa ideal for mail orders and for web shop companies. "Our experience is that this new Cortaderia variety can flower in those pots as well," says Dimitriou.
More plants on CC
"One of the biggest advantages is that since this is such a short compact Cortaderia, the growers can ship many more plants on a CC trolley compared to other Cortaderia. That saves the growers high freight costs per unit and space," he adds. Another important aspect of Tiny Pampa is that it is a low labor-intensive crop.
Plugs in 3 sizes
The big plugs from divisions are offered in three sizes; T4 – 104 cells tray, T5 – 84 cells tray, and the premium size T7-28 cells tray, here Fleurizon recommends 3l, 5l, and 7l pots.
Fleurizon can supply both TC plugs and plugs from divisions year round. "We have a very good availability 2023, but we advise you to order soon as we will be sold out as bookings are coming in fast," Dimitriou says.
Demand
The demand is increasing rapidly and in North and Northwest Europe this variety has made a big impact in the market, Dimitriou explains. "Certainly, the biggest markets are the Netherlands and Germany, but we also see an increase in, Belgium, Denmark and rest of Scandinavia."
Golden variegated variety in 2024
For 2024 Fleurizon will also come up with a golden variegated variety, the Tiny Pampa Gold. The first plants are already in the lab. For now, Fleurizon can supply this variety only in Europe and we are finding out if we can export to Canada.
