Veiling Rhein-Maas reported that they had a successful Mother's Day week in 2023 for all marketing channels, which was a significant improvement on the previous year. Both customer presence, the range offered and the processes and procedures were positive overall. Customer participation in the auction clock, clock pre sales and Remote buying was higher than in the previous year. The Webshop continues to develop positively and more and more customers are using it as a complementary purchasing channel. Sales of cut flowers and potted plants via the Clock Service were also highly satisfactory. Customers were satisfied with the quantity on offer – more than 52,000 load carriers at the auction only – and praised both the extensive and beautiful range and the fast logistical delivery of the products.
Stable demand and satisfactory price level
The strongest sales days of Mother's Day week were Monday, 8 May 2023, to Wednesday, 10 May 2023. The price level for cut flowers and potted plants was higher at the 2023 auction than in Mother's Day week 2022. As in previous years, there was a stable or rising price level for cut flowers towards the end of the week, while prices for outdoor products, such as bedding plants, fell slightly. The Clock Service also recorded higher demand than in the previous year, the price level of cut flowers was comparable to 2022.
Popular products
In the cut flower sector, roses, eustoma, bouquets and arrangements as well as peonies were particularly popular products among marketplace customers during Mother's Day week. Despite the persistently cool weather and the relatively few hours of sunshine in March and April, availability of cut flowers and potted plants was also high in the import sector this week, although slightly below the level of 2022. Among the potted plants, fewer ”energy-demanding plants“ such as begonias, kalanchoe, campanula and phalaenopsis were offered at the auction clock due to higher energy costs in recent months. Popular products in the potted plant section continued to be planted bowls and arrangements. Mother's Day week has been very important for these ”convenience products“ for several years, as they can be easily resold by customers with little effort.
Positive feedback
On the part of the suppliers, there is still a slight uncertainty regarding the expected course of the season, the effects of the current political and macroeconomic situation as well as the increase in costs. Fortunately, there was no longer any uncertainty on the part of customers regarding sales to end consumers; their feedback on purchasing from Veiling Rhein-Maas was consistently positive.
