Colombia: Chrysanthemum Week is in full swing

The Chrysanthemum is an important crop for the Colombian flower industry. From January to May 2023, 134,122 tons, worth 956 million USD have been exported. Annually, eight chrysanthemum breeders meet in Colombia to show their blooms to national and international producers and marketers. They do this during the so-called Chrysanthemum Week, which took off Monday, August 28, and will continue till September 1.

The eight breeders that participate in the event are Royal Van Zanten, Dekker, Progeny Breeding, Floritec, Deliflor, Danziger, Icon Selections, and Dümmen Orange. And they open the doors of their locations in Antioquia.

How it started
The idea began to be shared with friends in the sector. A few years ago, each breeder used to organize their variety showcase and display individually, but it was in 2015 that, by coincidence, Deliflor and Dümmen Orange ended up doing it in the same week. The results were so positive that they continued to hold their Open House together in week 35. Other breeders, such as Danziger in 2016, Icon and Dekker in 2018, Royal Van Zanten and Floritec in 2019, and this year Progeny Breeding, joined them, thus achieving the participation of almost all the chrysanthemum breeders present in Colombia.

This is how what we know today as 'Chrysanthemum Week' started in 2019. "The event was created in order to provide crops from the American continent and international buyers the opportunity to enjoy the union of Breeders in the same week to see the best varieties flourish. The results have been very positive and increasingly promising."
