Juan Demian Requena, Continental Breeding on Summerlight:

"It represents a classic color that is a must-have in all flower farms"

With large flower groups already embracing this new yellow-red rose variety in Colombia and with the first plants planted in Ecuador, expectations are high for the new yellow-red bicolor standard rose of Continental Breeding. The rose in question is Summerlight®, and in this article, Continental Breeder's Juan Demian Requena tells us more about this variety and its potential.

Vibrant and bright color
According to Requena, the vibrant and bright color of the rose is what strikes the attention immediately. "It is a standard rose with an intensive yellow-red bicolor, which makes it impossible to go unnoticed," says Juan Damian Requena of Continental Breeding.

Good characteristics
Besides color, more is needed for a variety to become a success, he continues. "In the wide assortment of flower types and colors, some manage to stand out from the rest due to a special characteristic; this is the case with Summerligh. It has a button that exceeds 5cm, stem length ranging between 50cm and 70cm, and a production of 145 flowers/m2 on soil, it is resilient and has a long vase life, beautiful foliage, is vigorous, produces a good number of basal shoots and duplicates very well."

A versatile rose
On top of that, Summerlight is a variety that serves various markets. "It can be shipped in solid bunches and, at the same time, it is so versatile that it becomes a wonderful focal element in a bouquet. In a display, it will always capture the consumer's attention; their gaze will be drawn to Summerlight because of its intensity.

"A must-have"
But is there room for this new variety in the market? "Yes, this variety emerges as a very interesting proposition to replace others that have been in the market for years. Now, it's Summerlight's turn, with a color similar to those varieties but more intense and with a more elongated and elegant button shape. It represents a classic color that is a must-have in all production farms."

Large interest
The potential of this variety is already being noticed by several farms. "In Colombia, large groups have already embraced the variety: Sunshine, Funza, Elite, Ipanema, as well as independent companies that have recognized the quality and beauty of Summerlight. Now, Ecuador has also caught on and started planting it."
