US (FL): Nursery in Brandenton continues poinsettia sale after Thanksgiving

The Saturday after Thanksgiving has been reserved for the Orban’s Nursery annual open house for over three decades. “We do that every year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. I think this is the 33rd year,” said Tyler Orban, a fourth-generation owner of the wholesaler that has been operating for over 100 years.

“It started out as an opportunity for people to drive through the nursery and see everything, and people kept asking to buy poinsettias, so they finally started letting them do that, and it’s kind of grown from there,” said Orban.

Food trucks, artisans, and a picturesque area where visitors can create a social-media-worthy photograph have become part of the growing tradition at Orban’s, 9601 Ninth Ave. NW, Bradenton.

This is the busiest time for the wholesale grower. “Our biggest thing is poinsettias, but we’re also shipping the most annuals that we do for the year,” said Orban. The nursery sells plants to local retailers and vendors, and the poinsettias are popular with churches and fundraisers.
