National Tulip Day on Saturday, 20 January 2024, was a great success. The start of the new cut tulip season is traditionally celebrated in the Netherlands with a huge picking garden on the Museum square in Amsterdam. An estimated 21,000 visitors from the Netherlands and abroad attended the event. Dutch tulip growers represented by Tulip Promotion Netherlands provided various surprises pertaining to the theme: ‘Let’s Dance!’.
TPN chairman Arjan Smit: “One of the highlights was the opening by DJ Hardwell. The audience was also amazing, with so many happy faces and enthusiastic responses. Which is exactly what we hope for every year. We want to make people happy with a bunch of colorful tulips”. Preceding the opening of the picking garden, Hardwell received his own ‘dancing’ tulip referencing his energetic music and shows. The red tulip with a yellow, fringed edge was personally selected by the DJ and music producer. The ‘dancing’ the tulips do is because they continue to grow slightly and adopt random twists in the vase. Around 16.30, the visitors picked the last few tulips, ending the festivities on the Museum Square.
The Netherlands is the world’s largest producer of cut tulips. In total, some 375 growers produced well over 1.7 billion tulips this season. The main export countries are Germany, the United Kingdom, France and Poland. Since 2012, the start of every cut tulip season has been celebrated with National Tulip Day on the third Saturday in January. The most popular, most fun spring flower is available in countless varieties, shapes, and colors. The cut tulip season lasts until mid-May. National Tulip Day is a Dutch Tulip Growers (TPN) initiative.
