Flower farmers in southwest China gear up for Chinese New Year

Southwest China's Yunnan Province is the country's largest producer of fresh flowers. With the Chinese New Year or Spring Festival just around the corner, farmers there are busy preparing their most special products for the celebrations. CGTN's Yang Jinghao reports.

In Chinese tradition, red symbolizes joy and hope. And so it's little wonder these vibrant red berries are highly sought after for the Chinese New Year, the country's most important festival.

Ao Yubao has spent the past few years cultivating winterberry holly, and it's proven to be a lucrative venture. AO YUBAO Flower Grower "I've sold more than 100,000 hollies this year, with sales reaching about two million yuan."

Ao is from Jinning in southwest China's Yunnan Province, a place known for its flowers. The local government says Jinning produced 5.6 billion freshly cut flowers in 2023, generating a production value of approximately 500 billion U.S. dollars. As the Spring Festival approaches, locals are gearing up to meet the growing demand.
