US (PA): Davidsville nursery owners eye retirement, look to sell to 'the right person'

Some of Dave Bruce's fondest memories involve days spent at his family's namesake nursery.

As a boy, he earned 50 cents an hour working for his father at Bruce Nurseries to save up for a one-speed Schwinn bicycle. Then there were the days after the 1977 flood, when trees grown at Bruce Nurseries were planted on Main Street to help revive downtown Johnstown.

Now, Bruce is looking to find someone to start making new memories on the 25-acre property in the Davidsville area. Bruce Nurseries is approaching its 80th anniversary, and Dave Bruce will turn 70 next month. He and his wife, Lynn, are planning to retire in the near future. They hope to find a new buyer to take the reins.

"Since my father retired in 1980, this place has been my baby ever since," Bruce said Wednesday at the nursery's office. "It's time to ... pass it on." He said he still loves caring for the sprawling property and its 100,000 mostly potted perennial plants – but after nearly 50 years on the job, daily 7 a.m. starts are taking a toll."
