Exploring the roots of the Flower Industry: The 2024 International Florists Trip to Ecuador

From May 18-26, 2024, Fresh-o-Fair organized the International Florist Trip to Ecuador during which florist could get to know flower farms and producers. "It was a transformative experience that highlighted the vital connection between florists and the origins of their flowers. This year's trip was not just about observing the beauty of Ecuadorian flowers but also about understanding the intricate processes, social initiatives, and environmental efforts that underpin the flower industry," says Claudia Muñoz, co-founder of Fresh-o-Fair, an online flower supply platform.

The heart of the flower industry
According to Claudia, one of the most critical aspects of the trip was giving florists the opportunity to see firsthand the work that goes into producing the flowers they use daily. Visiting the farms and breeders, allowed them to witness the journey from seed to bloom, gaining a deeper appreciation for the flowers they arrange. "The importance of knowing where the flowers come from cannot be overstated, as it fosters a greater sense of responsibility and support for sustainable and ethical practices," she states.

A symbiotic relationship
The trip also emphasized the importance of direct interaction between florists and flower breeders. Claudia: "Florists, who are at the forefront of the industry, can provide invaluable insights into market trends and preferences. This feedback helps breeders develop new varieties that meet the needs and desires of consumers. The relationship between florists and breeders is symbiotic, as it ensures the continuous evolution and improvement of floral products."

A journey through Ecuador's floral landscape
This year, florist visited several farms and breeders among which Flower Village, Endless Spring Farms, Dümmen Orange, United Selections, Jet Fresh Growers, Nevado Roses, Rosas del Corazon, and Cantiza Floral and Continental Breeding. Each of them offered a perspective on the flower industry:

At Flower Village, florists experienced the full process from breeding to farming. The owner himself guided them through the farm, explaining every step in detail. They saw their innovative techniques for environmental protection and the measures they take to ensure the well-being of their workers. At Endless Spring Farms, attendees learned about the hard work behind every flower they grow and the significant social impact their company has in the country. Claudia points out that the visit to Dümmen Orange was a highlight of the trip as they showcased a wide variety of flowers. In addition, there was a design challenge, as well as prizes, and the possibility to enjoy a meal and a conversation.

Claudia adds: "We were amazed by the beautiful varieties and the warm hospitality of United Selections, including a traditional dance performance that had us all joining in."
Moreover, Jet Fresh Growers "impressed" with its social projects, and a design challenge using their enhanced roses. The visit to Nevado Roses included a masterclass by Juan Villanueva, a florist from New York, which was attended by farmworkers to learn more about working with their flowers.

Furthermore, Rosas del Corazon showcased their rose varieties. Florists had the opportunity to cut their favorites and discuss new trends. And last but not least, Cantiza Floral and Continental Breeding organized a visit to a field of llamas, showcasing the beauty of Ecuador beyond its flowers. There was also a visit to their greenhouse that was filled with varieties.

The impact of the trip
The florists who joined the trip shared their experiences, highlighting the transformative impact of the trip:

Dilara Chomse from Berlin: "It was so great; I had a wonderful time. All the people I met were so lovely, I saw so many beautiful flowers, had lots of great food, and stayed in such beautiful places. I have a new appreciation for every single flower I work with because I now know some of the people behind them and understand how much work goes into each one."

Karin Geiger from the USA: "The florists' trip was amazing; there are no words to describe it. I learned about so many varieties that are about to come out, and I'm excited to see them. The people here are amazing, the food is amazing, and the experiences are amazing. The passion breeders and growers have for their flowers and their people is evident in the quality and colors of the new varieties. Ecuador is warm and inviting, with kind and open people. Just come; it will be more than you can imagine."

Their dedication to their craft and their commitment to social and environmental projects are inspiring. The connection between florists and the origins of their flowers is crucial for the future of the flower industry, and we are committed to continuing this trip annually to strengthen these bonds. Thank you to everyone who participated and supported this event!," Claudia concludes.
