Growing Together: Riya Bunty Shah on the benefits of the Members' Council of Royal FloraHolland

Riya Bunty Shah is the Business Development Director of Bloomingdale Roses in Kenya. This farm started in 2013 and grows high quality T-Hybrid roses. Since 2019, Riya has been a member of the Members' Council. In this interview she shares her experiences of the Members' Council and what benefits it gave her as an entrepreneur.

What is your role in the Members' Council?
"I have had the privilege of being a candidate on the Members' Council since its inception, and I am proud to be the only female representative from Africa. Alongside one male colleague from the continent, we contribute to an internationally diverse team with the potential to inspire others. The Members' Council was established to serve as a bridge between the executive board and the cooperative's members. In addition to my role on the council, I am also the Chair of the Nomination Committee. Our Committee is responsible for the adherence of the guidelines on gender diversity, the number of council candidates, and maintaining the appropriate profile for the entire Members' Council."

What does the Members' Council experience bring you as an entrepreneur?
"This role has been incredibly fulfilling for me. It has empowered me, boosted my confidence, and given me a valuable edge by keeping me informed about key issues through vital discussions at the Members' Council level. Additionally, I have gained insights into challenges faced by growers in Holland. On the business side, it is an opportunity to network and advance my personal and professional growth and most importantly contribute to topics of relevance for our sector."

How do you use the network of the Members' Council for your business?
"The Members' Council consists of highly networked and seasoned business professionals. Being part of this group has allowed me to expand my business and social circles significantly. Additionally, it has provided access to business opportunities that I would not have encountered otherwise. Whenever I have needed advice, the wisdom from senior members has been invaluable. The powerful mix of growers in the council has led to introductions to key market players, who have since become partners and contributed to our bottom line."

Why is it important that international growers take an active role in the Members' Council?
"Taking an active role in the members' council is crucial. As an international cooperative, we have a platform that acknowledges and values our contributions. The international segment accounts for 20 percent of the auction, making our participation vital. By being an integral part of the members' council, you not only expand your business network but also influence key decisions that impact the business. Our challenges differ from those of Dutch growers, and through collaboration and shared efforts, we can find effective solutions. It's essential to be involved in these important discussions to drive change. Having a voice that is heard is invaluable, and the members' council provides that opportunity."
