Cao Li, Xuan Cheng Phalaenopsis

China: "Rose-red phalaenopsis with big flowers is still the main choice for offline selling"

"Normally, summer is the sales off-season of flowers. However, now people only come to buy flowers when necessary, and there is an obvious sales decline," says Cao Li, the owner of Xuan Cheng Phalaenopsis. Xuan Cheng Phalaenopsis is a flower wholesaler in the Shanghai Hongqiao flower Market. The company mainly sells phalaenopsis.

Cao Li: "We started our shop in Shanghai Hongqiao Flower Market in 2019. Today, we have approximately 200 varieties of phalaenopsis in our warehouse, and 70 other varieties in the shop. We do not grow phalaenopsis by ourselves, we purchase phalaenopsis from surrounding greenhouses. We do not have the knowledge and skills to grow so many phalaenopsis. Instead, purchase and sales are our strengths. "

Rose-red phalaenopsis with big flowers is still the main choice for offline selling, she states. "Other soft colors have a limited market, especially for offline selling. People like to go here and buy Phalaenopsis as a gift, and then they prefer to buy a combined pot. Normally, there are 6 pieces, 8 pieces or 10 pieces in a pot. The price of a pot of phalaenopsis depends on the variety and the quantity of the flowers."

According to Cao Li, for offline selling, the main customers are people in their forties and fifties. "Young people prefer to sell flowers online in smaller sizes. As a result, they don't opt for the phalaenopsis because one combined phalaenopsis pot is too heavy to ship for a long distance," she explains. "Combined pots of phalaenopsis are high in demand during the Spring festival (Chinese New Year), then people like to buy it for good wishes," she adds.
