China: “Live-streaming is very helpful for new variety promotion”

"Live streaming is very common in China, almost all the products can be sold by it, including flowers," Chen Qi from Yunnan Colorful Seasons Co., Ltd says. In this article, Qi further discusses the phenomenon of live-streaming, and how he benefits from it.

The impact of the pandemic
"During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people came to the Dounan flower market to sell flowers online, which helped the industry a lot. The trend of live-streaming continues to increase nowadays. Especially young people have the skills to attract followers by using social media. Some of them have more than 2 million fans, successful influencers can sell about 10,000 products a day, which definitely surpasses the amount of products sold in shops."

Live-streaming

Promoting new varieties
Qi states that live-streaming is particularly useful for promoting new flower varieties as it shortens the sales path, saying: "Previously, it would take several months or years to promote a new variety. Whereas live-streaming allows us to make people familiar with a new variety within several minutes or hours. In this way, we receive market feedback more efficiently, which helps us when selecting varieties from breeders."

Development
Aside from drawing attention to livestreaming, Qi also points out that the Yunnan flower industry is doing well, saying: "The cut flower industry in Yunnan develops quite well, rose, carnation, lily, and eustoma grandiflorum are the most popular flowers here. And we see that a 'second generation' of farmers is emerging, as they take over the companies from their parents."
