Lucas Jansen, Floweracademy

"When trade is quiet, it is an ideal time for summer boot camps"

For 20 years, Lucas Jansen of Floweracademy has enjoyed providing courses for the horticulture sector, especially ornamental horticulture. For growers, exporters and others within the sector, they have special summer boot camps starting at the end of August.

"Currently, there is a lot of demand for courses, especially from exporters whose business are growing significantly, and who are hiring new people with no experience in the floriculture sector. New employees, have no extensive knowledge of flowers and plants, and that is where we can help," Lucas says.

Four boot camps
He also offered these boot camps during the pandemic. As they were in high demand, they decided to give the boot camps again. "Many big companies want us to give the courses, but that is not feasible for smaller exporters, growers or traders. To still offer them this course despite having busy schedules, the boot camps came up again. In one day, we give all the information in one course, which would normally be spread over a few courses." Lucas continues, "We give four boot camps: sales, management, indoor plants and garden plants. We run the courses for sales and management in Roelofarendsveen (the Netherlands). The courses for houseplants and garden plants are at the Green Trade Center in Aalsmeer."

Quiet
"When it's quiet in trade, it's a very busy time for courses. At the end of summer, people finally have time for a bootcamp. This year, we also notice a higher demand because it is less busy, and our customers want to make good use of their time. The coming months, I will be busy," Lucas laughs. "But after March it's high season in trade, and it's quiet for me."

Cambodia
Lucas has just returned from Cambodia, where he started a Flower academy: "I started this Flower academy Cambodia as a form of charity. People there want to learn, but can't pay much. That's why I started the charity school, where I teach flower arranging classes, among other things, to teach people a lot against little cost."
