Spring Flower Garden: “We want to build a new floral business model”

Our goal is to build a new business model that combines in-shop selling with online sales, and bring beauty to people's life," says Lin Ying, chairman of Spring Flower Garden and president of the Chengdu Flower Association. Spring Flower Garden is a flower trade market in the southwest of China, and is one of the five venues of the Chengdu World Horticultural Expo 2024. The Garden is located in the Pidu District, Chengdu, and was established in January 2017.

From retail shop to trade center
According to Ying, Spring Flower Garden covers 260,000 square meters, and has 600 vendors. "It hasn't always been this size. In 1998, Spring Flower Garden started as a retail shop, and eventually it developed into the trade center that it is today." She thinks that the location of the center contributed to this development. "More than half of the 600 vendors in our market have their farms nearby. In addition, flowers from other provinces can arrive here within one day. And thanks to the good infrastructure, the flowers can be quickly delivered to customers."

A new business model
She points out that the trade center currently aims to create a new business model that combines in-shop selling with online sales. "The Chinese flower market is changing. Branding and standardization became increasingly important. Meanwhile, online sales, such as live-streaming, are affecting the industry. We further see a decrease in the demand for landscape trees, and an increased interest in houseplants. For that reason, we realized that we have to add more small pot plants to support the vendors in our markets," Ying explains.

To create this new business model, Spring Flower Garden plans to provide more services. "We are currently in the second phase of the Spring Flower Garden project. We are developing services such as the Spring Flower Academy, a live-streaming center that provides training for professionals. We want to attract global industry experts to this platform. We invite horticulture-related enterprises to join us."
