NL: Greenhouse deck University of Amsterdam renovated

The University's greenhouse complex in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, is currently undergoing an extensive renovation. After an intensive period of preparation, HS Tuinbouw Service started the renovation of the greenhouse roof on Monday 19 August. Within six weeks, HS will renew the old polycarbonate sheets for modern polycarbonate sheets that are UV-resistant on two sides and offer extra strong protection against UV radiation. The greenhouse complex will thus again be assured of a greenhouse roof with the right degree of insulation and UV protection for at least 15 years. This is essential for cultivation.

Special complex
The university's greenhouse complex was completed in 2006, at the time as the first part of new construction. The facilities are used for teaching, research, and possibly contract activities. A large part of the complex is dedicated to research on genetically modified plants.

The total greenhouse complex is about 2,500 m2 in size and is divided into 43 compartments ranging in size from 19 m2 to 102 m2. Some of the greenhouses meet the containment requirements for experiments with transgenic organisms. Thus, in addition to ordinary plant greenhouses, four containment levels can be distinguished in the complex.

Maintenance partner
The work HS is carrying out on the greenhouse deck of the special greenhouse in the coming weeks will first involve dismantling the existing strips and rubber, dismantling the existing polycarbonate sheets and cleaning the substrate. This will be followed by mounting 1762 new polycarbonate sheets, mounting new strips and rubber and cleaning the greenhouse deck and gutters.

With this large-scale renovation, HS and the University of Amsterdam are giving a new dimension to the cooperation that both parties have had for several years. As a regular maintenance partner, HS has ensured for years that the greenhouse complex is in good condition throughout the year. They also built a greenhouse within a greenhouse a few years ago because there was still space in a corridor in the 2006 complex.
