First greenhouse equipped with foil alternative to (double) glass

Alcomij's first Optinova ETFE film greenhouse cover system has been successfully installed at one of their customers in the UK. This installation is an important step in the application of ETFE film and associated systems in greenhouse construction, according to the greenhouse cover system specialist.

The rise of ETFE film in greenhouse construction
ETFE film is a high-tech material that has gained prominence in the greenhouse construction sector in recent years, although ETFE still remains a relatively new material for greenhouses. In Japan, they have been using the material in greenhouses for some time, but utilities and shipping are also using it.

Besides traditional materials such as glass, ETFE offers unique properties that create new opportunities. For instance, Alcomij sees potential as an alternative to (double) glass in greenhouses. The product was on display at Alcomij's stand for the first time at GreenTech Amsterdam.

The Westland company's customer in the UK was recently introduced to the material and is enthusiastic. The installation team was particularly impressed by the quality of the greenhouse cover system and the user-friendliness and safety of the ETFE film. The foil is lightweight, making it safe and easy to build with, resulting in a relatively lightweight construction.

Light transmission and insulation
The material further stands out with high-light transmission. EFTE film can achieve a light transmission of 94% at a diffusivity of 60 Haze. EFTE film is applied in two layers. The double layer offers high insulation value, resulting in lower heating costs and energy savings. The panels have a u-value of 2.9 W/m2/K.

The material can be guaranteed for 20 years. The material is also reusable and recyclable. Also useful, Alcomij stresses, is that the foil is naturally self-cleaning.

The material can withstand extreme weather conditions, hail, and snow pressure. If anything does break, repair is easy.

All this makes the Alcomij Optinova ETFE foil greenhouse cover system a well-considered investment for growers looking for a sustainable, energy-efficient, and future-proof solution, according to the greenhouse cover system specialists.
