NL: "A lot of money is given for beautiful white spray roses"

With a calm and sunny summer behind us, there is always the question of how the market is doing. The weather is changing, and temperatures are dropping, but at the auction, it seems to be getting busier, says Theo de Mooij of Hoven & de Mooij.

"All markets are open again, and so are most flower shops. We had a difficult time due to the heavy rainfall in spring which affected the supply and sale of outdoor goods. Also, due to the weaker spring in Kenya, it was challenging. However, fortunately, that is improving. There was a production shortage in Ecuador for some time, but that too has been pretty much resolved. The supply changes daily, but so far flowers haven't been completely unavailable. Prices are average, but they do fluctuate during the week. Prices are especially high when there are not many good flowers available. For example, a lot of money is paid for beautiful white spray roses, they are often used for weddings."

"At the auction they have now started to apply Multi Transaction Auctioning, which seems to be going well. At the end of the summer, they want to transfer all flowers and plants to Central Auctioning and order picking at the Aalsmeer auction is also planned sometime in the next few months. We keep an eye on these developments, however, things can always change. For the buyers, it does mean that we will have a different dynamic in terms of auctioning and buying the different product groups. It's in a process of change," says Theo. "The time are changing, and so is the market."
