Speed breeding and climate chambers

"Speed breeding is a breeding technique that utilizes controlled environments, optimal lighting conditions, and other advanced methods to significantly accelerate the growth and development of plants. By carefully regulating these factors, researchers can produce multiple generations of plants within a single year. This rapid generation turnover is particularly advantageous for crop improvement and scientific research. It allows researchers to quickly evaluate and select plants with desirable traits, such as increased yield, disease resistance, and climate adaptability. As a result, speed breeding can greatly expedite the development of improved crop varieties, contributing to more efficient and sustainable agricultural practices."

Bosman Van Zaal is a provider of growth chambers and controlled environment rooms, designed to align with the demands of speed breeding technology. Speed breeding represents an approach in agricultural research, aimed at accelerating crop development cycles to meet the increasing global demand for food security and sustainability.

According to Bosman Van Zaal, their specialized growth chambers and controlled environment rooms offer precise control over key environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, light intensity, and spectral composition. "This level of control is critical in speed breeding, as it allows researchers, growers, and breeders to create optimal conditions for rapid plant growth and development."

Key benefits of climate chambers, according to Bosman Van Zaal

  • Precise environmental control: "Bosman Van Zaal chambers provide greater control over temperature, LED grow lights, humidity, CO2, and other critical environmental factors, allowing you to precisely replicate or manipulate growing conditions."

  • Reduced variability: "Consistent and controlled environments minimize experimental
variability, ensuring reliable and reproducible results."

  • Energy efficiency: "Our chambers are designed with energy efficiency in mind, featuring advanced insulation and climate control systems to minimize operating costs."

  • Scalability: "Bosman Van Zaal offers a wide range of chamber sizes and configurations to suit your specific needs, from small benchtop models to large walk-in rooms."

  • Durability and reliability: "These chambers are constructed with high-quality materials and components to ensure long-lasting performance and reliable operation."

Different types of Climate Chambers, according to Bosman Van Zaal

  • Tissue Culture Rooms: Maintain sterile environments with precise temperature, humidity, and lighting control, ideal for propagating plant cells and tissues

  • Germination Rooms: Simulate optimal conditions for seed germination, featuring controlled temperature, humidity, and light cycles to ensure high germination rates and healthy seedlings

  • Growth Rooms: Provide ideal environments for vegetative plant growth, offering adjustable temperature, light intensity, and photoperiod control to maximise plant development

  • Flowering Rooms: Create specific lighting conditions necessary for plant flowering and fruiting, often featuring adjustable photoperiod and light spectrum control

  • Environmental Stress Chambers: Simulate various environmental stresses, such as drought, temperature extremes, and salinity, to study plant responses and develop stress-tolerant varieties

  • Drying Chambers: Dry or cure adequately with airflow and moisture removal, preventing botrytis and other molds and fungus, especially suitable for cannabis
    Data management is essential.

  • To achieve maximum results with the principles of speed breeding, data management is crucial. The climate chambers from Bosman Van Zaal can be standardly equipped with the platform and sensors from Polariks, allowing batch-driven data to be recorded and analyzed. All data and results can be traced back to a specific batch, enabling precise analysis of which conditions will lead to the optimal final result

A mobile grow rack system; The OptiRack Grow
Bruynzeel Storage Systems and Bosman Van Zaal, with over 100 years of combined experience, collaborated to create the OptiRack Grow™—a mobile grow rack system for various applications.

Plug and play
The OptiRack GrowTM consists of a racking system by Bruynzeel, based on years of expertise in storage systems, made mobile. Turned into a plug-and-play turnkey system by Bosman Van Zaal, incorporating airflow, LED lighting, irrigation, sensors, and software.

Robust and sustainable
The system has been engineered with the goal of "exceptional durability and longevity" . It is crafted from certified materials. "The system stands as one of the sturdiest and most robust devices for vertical farming. The materials and techniques used also make it one of the most sustainable racking systems out there."

Flexible and efficient
The system seeks to optimize the utilization of available space to grow by eliminating unnecessary aisle space. "The system is very flexible and can be tailored to your setup. Standard lengths reach up to 24 meters, and the company offers custom designs."

A modular cart system with docking station by Bosman Van Zaal; The Grow & Roll
The Grow & Roll is a modular and turnkey vertical farming system fully equipped with HVAC, irrigation, and LED installations. The mobile cart system was developed in-house by Bosman Van Zaal in 2014. "It has since then been successfully installed at a range of customers worldwide. It can be installed in various set-ups, including climate chambers and shipping containers. It is extremely suitable for research purposes or for the production of food crops such as lettuce and herbs and starting materials of seeds and cuttings."

Plug and play
The system consists of a cart and docking station. It integrates irrigation, air distribution, and lighting, offering various lighting options, such as fully controllable LED. Airflow options include slots on every level of the docking station, via a double-sided wall in the climate chamber, or via overhead air ducts

Control and flexibility
The carts can be clicked in and out of the docking station, starting or stopping airflow, irrigation, and lighting. "This makes it easy to clean the system or relocate the carts. Combined with a climate computer, the system is fully controllable. The Grow & Roll has a closed, circular character. Saving water and energy."

Integration
The Grow & Roll can be integrated into a shipping container or climate chamber. This can also be provided by Bosman Van Zaal. The system allows for flexible placement - angled or straight - and with up to 6 adjustable levels, depending on factors like crop height, distance from crop to LED, and irrigation type.
